WLPGA retains its Observer Status to IOPCF and the HNS Convention until 2018

WLPGA Director David Tyler attended meetings at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) headquarters in London this week where progress on the HNS Convention was discussed.

The International Convention on Liability and Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Carriage of Hazardous Substances by Sea 1996 (HNS Convention) will, when it comes into force, provide compensation for damage resulting from the maritime transport of hazardous and noxious substances (www.hnsconvention.org).

The HNS Convention was adopted by Governments at a Diplomatic Conference in 1996 organised by the IMO, a specialised agency of the United Nations.

LPG falls under the definition of HNS and the WLPGA participates in the discussions on the HNS Convention through its observer status.

The WLPGA’s observer status was reviewed during the meetings this week and it was confirmed that the WLPGA would retain its observer status for a further three years to 2018.
