LP Gas Development and Best Practice Workshop in Sri Lanka

WLPGA's Director, David Tyler holds a LP Gas workshop in Sri Lanka's capital with aims to develop a successful and sustainable LP Gas business in the country.

On 27th June 2012 Director of the WLPGA David Tyler held a LP Gas workshop in Colombo in cooperation with the newly formed LP Gas Association of Sri Lanka. The main objective of the workshop, which was attended by nearly 60 delegates, was to help develop the LP Gas business in Sri Lanka in a safe and sustainable way following the recent end to hostilities in the country.

David gave the delegates an overview of the Asian LP Gas business focusing on the need for good safety and business practices in line with the guidelines set out in the WLPGA publications. Suyash Gupta from the Indian Autogas Coalition provided some compelling evidence for Autogas opportunities in Sri Lanka. Saidul Islam, from the Petregas joint venture in Bangladesh, gave participants encouragement to develop the LP Gas business in Sri Lanka following the successful implementation of a packed and bulk LP Gas business in Bangladesh. David provided a summary of the successful kerosene to LP Gas conversion programme in Indonesia. Something the Sri Lankan industry is considering emulating. He also described the opportunities for LP Gas with the recent discussions on Black Carbon and Carbon Credits. The workshop attracted considerable media attention because 70% of the population is still reliant on solid fuel (wood and charcoal) for their primary energy use and with no natural gas the opportunities for LP Gas are enormous. The newly formed LP Gas Association plans to join the WLPGA and will be attending the Association Executives meeting in Bali in September, scheduled just before the World Forum.
