WLPGA supported the Third LPG Summit in Africa held at the Mlimani City Conference Centre, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on 18th – 19th July 2016. (www.lpgsummit.com/Africa2016/).
WLPGA Deputy Managing Director Michael Kelly and Director David Tyler chaired two sessions over the two-day programme and gave presentations on the challenges and opportunities for LPG in the region.
The event was organised by All Events Group from Singapore, a company that WLPGA have been working closely with over recent years. As well as the two-day conference there was a large exhibition with nearly 60 booths.
Keynote speeches from senior government officials from the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Petroleum Bulk Procurement Agency set the scene for the conference which was attended by close to 300 delegates.
Per capita consumption for LPG in East Africa is below 2kg/year in many countries presenting an enormous opportunity for both equipment manufacturers and marketing companies who were well represented. Several presentations focused on unlocking the latent demand for LPG in the region.
WLPGA members Oryx Energies and Hexagon Ragasco were two of the major sponsors, supported by Aiut.
During the week Michael Kelly and David Tyler held meetings with the UNHCR to discuss ways for WLPGA to work more closely with the aid agency to supply LPG into refugee camps.
After the conference David ran a two-day training LPG workshop, together with the Petroleum Institute of East Africa, for senior representatives from the LPG industry in the region, including the National Oil Company of Malawi which is now looking to include LPG in its energy portfolio. Delegates from Mozambique, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) also attending the training.
The WLPGA holds these LPG training workshops with PIEA annually in East Africa and would be interested in arranging them with other organisations or associations.
